The wide range of wildlife available at the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is worth mentioning. There are gaur, Sambar, barking deers, Mouse Deer,Nilgiri Thir, Cobra and Python. You can also spot a tiger in its natural habitat if you are lucky, on a safari through the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. You will also find rare lion tailed macaque, Nilgiri Langur,Common langur and the Bonnet macaque. The beautiful birds gracing this wildlife sanctuary at Kerala include darters, Cormorants, Kingfishers, racket tailed Drongoes while the reptiles found at the Periyar Wildlife sanctuary are Monitor Lizards basking in the sun on the rocks along the lake shore..

How to reach Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Kumily district of Kerala, in the higher slopes of the Western Ghats.To reach the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, you can travel by air and come to Cochin, the international airport being only 190 km away or you can come to Chennai and travel 140 km from the Chennai Airport.The Kottayam railway Station, the nearest railway station to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is 114 km from Periyar. To travel to this wildlife sanctuary in Kerala by road, you can reach Kumily the nearest town to the sanctuary which is connected by state and private buses from Kotayam, Ernakulam and Madurai in Tamil Nadu.
