Introduction to Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

This sanctuary has been made from a Part of the Wayanad Plateau and it covers the districts of Cannanore in the North and Calicut in the south.The word 'wayanad' means 'land of the swamps'. The region of the sanctuary, which is a significant pat of the Nilgiri Biological Reserve was announced a wildlife sanctuary during 1973.The sanctuary follows scientific methods that do not harm the traditional lifestyles of the local tribal population living there.

Description of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

The wildlife found here includes elephants, panthers, tigers, jungle cats, civet cats, monkeys, wild dogs, bisons, deer and bears. There are also various varieties of snake and monitor lizards. The bird population include peacocks, babblers, owls, jungle fowls etc. The Wayanad Wildlife sanctuary has rich deciduous forests of teak and marshes, bamboo and other grasslands. The Sanctuary is one of the most rich and extensive forest belts of Peninsular India. Elephants here are mainly found only during the dry seasons as they migrate to other places during the heavy monsoons. The Wayanad wildlife sanctuary, with its fogy beautiful hills, rich bio diversity, charming dales, rich avifauna, and different plantations such as coffee, tea, cardamom and pepper, present the ideal location for a wonderful and exciting holiday.

How to reach Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

Calicut is the nearest railhead, at a distance of 110 km from the Wayanad Wildlife sanctuary. Cochin, 300 kms away is the nearest airport. Calicut is connected to all major Indian cities and middle east places through regular flights. There are buses of the State Road Transport Corporations of Kerala and Karnataka that connect Wayanad wildlife sanctuary with places such as Mysore, Coorg, Bandipur, Nagarhole, Ooty etc.
