Silent Valley National Park

Unlike other wildlife parks in India, Silent Valley National Park set up in 1984 in Palghat district is not only famous for its rich wildlife but also for history of struggle, courage and preservation that has added to the dimension of wildlife tourism in Kerala . The local name for the national park in Silent Valley is Sairandhrivanam, which means the forest in the valley. Located in the Kundali Hills of the Western Ghats, Silent Valley in Kerala also holds rare plants and herbs in its virgin tropical evergreen forests interspersed with rivers. This tourist site in Kerala is surrounded with Attappadi Reserve Forests in the east, and vested forests of the Palghat and Nilambur divisions in the west and south.

In 1888, the region was declared a reserved land under the Forest Act and later notified as a Reserved Forest by the Government of Madras in 1914. Subsequently, the area of Silent Valley, where Kerala State Electricity Board decided to construct a Hydel Power Project in 1970s, was not included inside the premises declared as National Park in 1980. Later in 1984, the park was again renotified as a National Park with the project area included into it as a result of struggle and objection of conservationists. In 1986, the Silent Valley was declared the core area in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.
