Eravikulam National Park

Eravikulam National Park in Kerala, spreads across 97 square km along the Western Ghats in the Idukki district. The terrain of Eravikulam meaning streams and pools, has high altitude grasslands interspersed with sholas on a high rolling plateau at an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level. In national park in Eravikulam of Idukki District , you can also see Anamudi, the highest peak of southern Himalayas.

Eravikulam in Kerala , also contains the largest surviving population of Nilgiri tahr nearing about 750, which is endemic to the southern Western Ghats. G rasslands, shrub lands, shola forests, valleys and folds along with the exotic wildlife in this national park, compliment the concept of Wildlife Tourism in Kerala . History says that the area, which originally was used as a Games Preserve for the Kannadevan Hills Produce Company in the colonial days, was taken over in 1971 by the Kerala Government. While it was declared as a sanctuary in 1975, it was upgraded to a national park in 1978. Incidentally, the planter community and the Muduvan tribals of the hills, continue their association with the protection and management of the park.

 

Wildlife in Eravikulam National Park

Nilgiri Tahr also known as the Nilgiri Ibex, is the main attraction of the park and half the world population of Nilgiri Tahr resides here. Besides , you can also spot elephant, leopard, tiger, malabar civet, sambar, barking deer, nilgai, langur and phyhon. Nilgiri marten, small clawed otter, ruddy mongoose, and dusky striped squirrel cal also be seen for a while. You can also find varieties of birds like black and ornage flycatcher, Nilgiri pipit, Nilgiri wood pegeon, white bellied shortwing, Nilgiri verditer flycatcher and Kerala laughing thrush.

•  A motorable road leads up to Rajamalai, the park headquarter. You can also drive down from Kochi (Kerala) and Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu) to Munnar
