History of Khuni Darwaza

The Khuni darwaza was previously called the Kabuli Darwaza before it got its name changed by the gruesome saga of murders that blemished the beautiful gate. This Gate was built by Sher Shah Suri during the 16th century and stands on the main Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg.

There is a gruesome history that led to the gate being called the Khuni Darwaza. It was at this Khuni darwaza that centuries ago Dara Shikoh's head was displayed and hung for public viewing after he was murdered by his own brother Aurangazeb. Centuries later, during the first war of independence in 1857, the British came and slaughtered the last Mughuls in Delhi. British officer Captain Hudson killed all including the last emperor of the Mughuls, Bahadur Shah Zafar . His body was mercilessly displayed along with other dead bodies from the Khuni darwaza before being taken to Kotwali. It is said that blood was dripping from the ceilings of the gate for days.

It is said that even today there is blood that drips from the ceiling of the Khuni darwaza during the rainy season. This is possibly because of the reaction of the rainwater with the rusted iron joints of the gate.
