Mehendi Ceremony is another entertaining ceremony which is held in the bride's family. The bride is adorned with paste of henna which is intricately designed in the hands and feet of the bride. The gorgeous look imparted by it is reflected through powerful designs, often drawn by an expert artist.

The Mehendi Ceremony is followed by a ritual program. This ritual enchantment is a part and parcel of the Hindu Marriage. The bride is at first made to bath in perfumed water. The water is mingled with various sorts of aromatic petals. Petals of some fragrant flowers like rose petals, jasmine petals etc. the water gives a wonderful smell.

The bride is then made to sit and an expert at first draws an outline. Then the entire thing is gradually filled with henna. The task is intricate and not only demands some basic skill but also great amount of patience. Mehendi also has symbolic connotation of purity.

There is also a tremendous quantity of co-operation required from the bride. Henna is of various types. Some chemical Hennas are also available nowadays. But original henna is much costly and is also beneficial. There is some inherent Ayurvedic qualities in Henna. It has disinfectant quality and is said to kill germs.

Mehendi ceremony is accompanied with great merriment and entertainment. People join hands and sings songs in order to entertain the bride. Mainly people of the bride's family enjoys to their heart's content during the Mehendi Ceremony. It is also a time to get together with your near and dear ones.

They wear new clothes; bedeck them selves with jewelry and hops around. Since it is basically a program concerning women, they take active part in the ceremony. Mehendi is generally held a couple of days before the marriage; the function is accompanied by vibrant music and vivacious dance. The entire function has a special significance. It is said that if the bride can hold her mehendi for a longer time, then it is highly auspicious. Since mehendi indicates good fortune, the longer she retains her Mehendi, the better it is. The bride is not permitted to perform any household work till her Mehendi melts away.

Mehendi mainly consists of finely chopped Henna leaves. The leaves are finely chopped in the form of dust. They easily mingle with water and in turn impart a color to water. The picture of the bride as well as the groom is drawn over the hands and feet of the bride. The groom should look for it and discover it. Till then the marriage does not initiate.

The other name of Henna is Hawsonia inermis, and is otherwise named Henne; the various forms are Al-Khanna, Al-henna, Mendee, Egyptian Privet, Jamaica Mignonette, and Smooth Lawsonia. Some festivals see a splendid usage of Henna; Holi, Rakhi, Diwali Mehendi, Karva Chauth, Gangaur and Teej are some examples.
