Shoulder Surgery India

The shoulder joint is the most flexible joint of the body. Since it allows one to raise, rotate and swing ones arms it is also more prone to injury. Generally sportspersons are more susceptible to shoulder injuries as their occupation involves the use of shoulders.

Rotator Cuff is the merging of tendons on the upper part of the upper arm. The tendons attach the shoulder muscle to the bone and help to lower and raise the arm and rotate the arm in and out. If the rotator cuff is torn significantly, surgery is generally recommended. This is to avoid the humeral head from jabbing up through the tear against the bony acromion. This often leads to arthritis of the shoulder joint. Through surgery the tear is sewn and again attached to the bony insertion on the lateral border of the humerus.

Shoulder Problems

Bursitis or Tendinitis
This is a common shoulder problem that occurs with repetitive activities such as weightlifting, swimming and that leads to the squeezing of the rotator cuff under the acromion. This can be treated with by relaxing and modifying activities initially.

Impingement and Partial Rotator Cuff Tears
Spurs under the acromion or the A.C. joint with inflammation is associated with tearing of the rotator cuff. Light exercise and cortisone injections are recommended but surgery is the only means to remove the spurs and repair the rotator cuff.

Full Thickness Rotator Cuff Tears
Full thickness Rotator Cuff tears off generally when there is a heavy lifting or a fall. When non-operative treatment like exercise and modification of activities do not work, surgery is required for the full repair. Spurs are removed by arthroscopic technique and repair of the tears in the rotator cuff.

Instability
Overuse of shoulder ligaments and injury can force out the head of the upper arm bone from the shoulder socket. It is then shoulder instability occurs. This dislocation of the arm bone from the shoulder socket can occur repetitively. This requires surgery. Open surgical repair or Arthroscopic surgical repairs are done followed by complete rehabilitation, physical exercise.

Fractured Collarbone and AC Joint Separation
Fractured collarbone is a common injury among children who often fracture their collarbone by falling when playing. When there occurs a severe fracture or AC joint separation, surgery is required.

Fractured Head of the Arm Bone
Fractured Head of the Arm Bone occurs particularly to old people with osteoporosis as a result of falling on outstretched arms. Surgical repair is often needed when it is fractured or displaced. Often replacement with an artificial joint or prosthesis is required.

Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis
Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis results in damage of the shoulder joint and the surrounding tissues. Tearing off of the rotator cuff or the capsule also leads too Rheumatoid arthritis. When the articular surface of the joint becomes thin Osteoarthritis occurs. Swelling of the synovium lining produces chemicals that damage the inner lining of the joint.

Types of Surgical Procedures
Patients with painful shoulders are often recommended shoulder replacement. The entire socket is replaced or a new head of the bone is implanted to treat shoulder troubles.

Arthroscopy
Insertion of a thin tube like device with small lens and lights into tiny holes of the ailing joint to look inside it. The surgeon catches the full view of the Orthopaedic problem on the blown up picture in the monitor. The correction can be done by inserting other surgical instruments. This surgical process is arthroscopy. It can be done in outdoor patient.

Open surgery
Open surgery is generally done when the type of problem is unique and more complicated. Open surgeries are definitely associated with better results but it takes time to recover than arthroscopy surgeries.
