Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction surgery is a cosmetic surgery to remove excess fat deposits in the body and give it back its shape. Unwanted adipose tissues accumulate specially in the hips and the tummy areas because of wrong food habits and lack of physical exercise. Liposuction is performed on the hips, tummy, thighs, upper arms, inside of the knees, neck, the back area and ankles.

Liposuction removes the fat through surgery which one is unable to remove through diet and exercise. However Liposuction surgery is not an alternative to weight control and obesity and it does not remove stretch or cellulite marks. The fat cells are not replaced in your body specially if you take up a healthy regime after the surgery.

There is always a limitation to the amount of fat that can be removed through liposuction surgery. Not more than three liters of fat can be removed from the body so one may not be able to slim areas in their body as they would like to.

Liposuction surgery is performed after administering anesthesia. Sometimes local anesthesia also work for patients and operation may be performed on the same day the patient is released to go home.

The Various Methods of Liposuction Surgery

Wet Liposuction
This is the most common form of liposuction surgery. Before the operation the surgeon injects local anaesthetic, adrenaline and salt solution into the fatty area that is to be treated. This fluid mixture reduces bleeding, bruising, swelling and helps to remove fat cells effectively.

A thin metal tube called the cannula is inserted though the incision make on the skin. Cannula is attached to a syringe or a vacuum pump which is moved on the fatty layers to suck out the fat and the fluid. For larger areas more than one incision is made to remove the excess fat stored. Once the fat is removed the cuts are stitched. Another technique is ‘tumescent liposuction’ when a excess amount of fluid is injected.

Dry Liposuction
Dry Liposuction method does not use any fluid while the cannula is used in the similar technique as in Wet Liposuction. This method causes more bleeding and bruises and is not used much.

Ultrasound Liposuction
Ultrasound technique uses the sound waves to break the fat which is firm before it is removed.

The treated area is firmly bandaged and one is fitted with an elasticated support garment. This helps in reducing swelling and give the shape to the body.
