General Introduction:

The construction of Akbar's tomb at Sikandra was started by the emperor himself. But the finishing touches were given in Jahangir's reign. A connoisseur of arts and eclectic in taste Akbar used designs in the architecture exemplifying his sense of liberalism.


History:

Akbar the great Mughal emperor was known for his religious tolerance. He had founded a new religion called the Din-i-Ilahi which comprised of the best elements from all religions of the world. His eclectic bent of mind was also noticed in the design and pattern of his tomb at Sikandra. The construction work began under his reign but was completed in the reign of his son Jahangir. The gateway is similar to the Buland Darwaza or the high door in Fatehpur Sikri. Akbar started the construction adhering to principles of Spartan style of Timurid architecture. Jahangir added decorations to the mausoleum. One can notice different architectural designs in the mausoleum. But the experimentation rather than the harmony in architecture is more noticeable. Nearby is the tomb of Jahangir's mother Mariam. The tomb lies at the centre of the garden conforming to the Char Bagh style. The same pattern is noticed in the Taj Mahal. There is an open terrace atop the tomb. The terrace has a replica of the coffin. The real tomb lies at the base. Akbar's tomb Sikandra is one of the monumental marvels of the Mughals.

The real cenotaph is in the basement and is adorned in colorful golden, green and blue hues on the stucco walls. You can catch a glimpse of deer and exotic birds on the lawns outside.
