History of William Fraser Bungalow

What first comes to mind when writing about the History of William Fraser Bungalow is that this building is about three hundred years old and has stood witness to several epoch making events in the life of Delhi city. The William Fraser Bungalow was constructed in the year 1803. Special Lakhori bricks were used for the construction of the building.

When William Fraser came to India and became the deputy resident of Delhi, he was given this bungalow to live in. It was a magnificent building and what was most striking about this building was the verandah from which one could get a view of the river Yamuna as well.

Sadly however this building could not retain its original beauty for long. The reason being that in the year 1857, at the time of the Great Revolt of the Indian Sepoys, this building was severely damaged. The History of William Fraser Bungalow says that it was badly affected during this tumultuous time period.

Fortunately however it was later renovated and has ever since been well maintained. The moment of glory for this building came in the year 1997 when it was given the Heritage award. It is one of those rare buildings which combine the Victorian and the Indo Sarcenic styles of architecture and achieves splendid results. Moreover the building has been well maintained but much change has not been brought about in its original structure.

Presently this building houses the administrative office of the Northern Railway.
