Salimgarh Fort-Nearby Attractions

Introduction: Salimgarh Fort was constructed on an island of River Yamuna in the year 1546, by Islam Shah Suri, also called Salim Shah, son and successor of Sher Shah Suri. The Salimgarh Fort in Old Delhi is covered by rock-solid rubble masonry walls and is multilateral in shape to some extent. The entry to the fort is allowed from its gate on the northern side. This north gate is also known as Bahadur Shahi Gate as it was built by Bahadur Shah Zafar during 1854 to 1855.

Red Fort: Red Fort or Lal Qila was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and was originally known as Qila-e-Mualla. The Prime Minister of India hoists the national flag in Red Fort every year on 15th August.

Jama Masjid: Jama Masjid, which lies 500 meters to the west of Red Fort, is the largest mosque in India. Starting from 1650 the construction of the mosque took 6 years. Ustad Khalil was the architect of the marvelous mosque.

Chandni Chowk: Starting from Lahore Gate of Red Fort to Fatehpuri Masjid is the actual stretch of Chandni Chowk Street and was divided into four parts. Chandni Chowk or "Moonlight Square" is one of the most famous and historic places of Delhi. Built around 300 years ago, the chowk has many havelis, temples, markets and food joints.

St. James Church: the famous Colonel James Skinner built the St. James Church in a Greek cross design. Skinner built the church in 1836 to show his gratitude to God as he survived intense injuries in the war of 1857. His grave has been laid in front of the altar of the church.

Dara Shikoh Library: The building of Dara Shikoh Library was built by Shah Jahan's son and successor, Dara Shikoh. In 1659 he was killed by his brother Aurangzeb. During the war of 1857 the building was damaged to a great extent and many precious books were stolen.

Rajghat: The memorial of the Father of the Nation, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi's cremation site is known as Rajghat. Mahatma Gandhi was cremated here on 31st January, 1948, after he was assassinated.

Lothian Cemetery: Located on Lothian Road near Kashmeri Gate on the north-east of Railway Bridge, Lothian Cemetery is the first British Cemetery in Delhi. The members of the British community of Delhi were buried here between the years 1808 and 1867.
