Chittorgarh Fort

Introduction

Very close to the Gambheri River, on a lofty hill, is the famous Chittorgarh Fort whose history dates back to the seventh century. Chittorgarh preciously known as Chitrakut was the capital of the Sisodia clan of the Rajputs between the 8th and 16th century.

The fort of Chittorgarh is a reminder of the valor and courage of the Rajputs. Both men and women of the Rajput clan fought together to keep the invaders away.

Description

The Chittorgarh Fort is an imposing structure with seven gates. It was built by the rulers of the Maurya Dynasty around the 7th century. The fort is named after the well known Chittrangad Maurya. It stretches over an area of about 7 acres. The three main gates of Chittorgarh Fort are the Padan Pol, Bhairon Pol and Hanuman Pol. The other four gateways are Jorla Pol, Ganesh Pol, Lakshman Pol and Ram Pol.

The architecture of Chittorgarh Fort reflects the archetypal style of Rajput architecture. About 150 meters above the ground level, Chittorgarh Fort can be helpful is the counter attacks of the Rajputs against the Sultan of Delhi, Ala-ud-din-Khilji. The famous monuments within the fort are the twin towers Kirti Stambh or the Tower of Fame and the Vijay Stambh or the Tower of Victory. The many temples, water tanks and palaces are also worth a visit. The Palace of Queen Padmini is as beautiful the queen was herself. Temples like Meera Temple, Kumbh Shyam Temple and Kalika Mata Temple are beautiful architectural marvels.
