Project Tiger

Introduction

Initiated in 1972 by the Wildlife Protection Act and launched on 1 April 1973, Project Tiger was a wildlife conservation project is a popular attempt towards conservation of wildlife in India. First Tiger Census conducted in 1972 revealed that there are only 1827 tigers in India.

Aims

Project Tiger aims to protect and conserves tigers which is soon becoming endangered species. Many tiger reserves have been built across the country where tigers are protected from extinction. It strives to maintain a good tiger population in India. There are 27 Project Tiger Wildlife Reserves in India spread over an area over 37,000 square kilometers.

Project Tiger

Project Tiger aims at removal of all sorts of human activities and intervention from the core area which is where the tigers are kept. This area is free of human presence and the tigers are allowed to live in the natural habitat. The eco system of this area is repaired to facilitate the natural living of the tigers.

There are different government and non-government organizations that are a part of Project Tiger and are striving tigers from extinction.
