Nearby Attractions of Old Secretariat

The Old Secretariat is an important historical building in New Delhi. It was constructed immediately after the British decided to transfer their capital from Kolkata to Delhi so that the Legislative council of the Central Government could meet here. Presently it is the seat of the Delhi Legislative Assembly. There are several Nearby Attractions near the Old Secretariat that are all well worth a visit. Coronation Durbar Memorial

In the years 1877, 1903, 1911 the British held their Durbars at this site on the occasions of Queen Victoria being declared the Empress of India, the accession of Edward VII and the accession of King George V respectively. There are statues and red sandstone plinths at this site.

Majnu ka Tila

This is a large gurudwara which has been named after a Muslim popularly called Majnu because of his deep love of the Almighty. Guru Nanak came to visit him in his small hut and guide him to the path of salvation. The gurudwara was later constructed at this spot where his hut once existed.

Metcalfe House

Sir Thomas Metcalfe constructed this house in the year 1835. Built in the European style, the chief attraction of this house is the room which contains records related to Napoleon. It housed several large gatherings. Presently this house is the centre of Defense services Documentation.

Flagstaff Tower

A ring shaped octagonal tower was constructed by the British at the spot where all the British women and children met before leaving for Karnal at the time of the Great Revolt of 1857. The last fight by the Indians was also put up by them here. Even though there is no flagstaff now, at one point of time the Union Jack was hoisted here.

Kashmiri Gate

This is a gate to the north of the city of Shahjahanabad. It has been named the Kashmiri Gate because all the royal processions that were going to Kashmir always inevitably passed through this gate. The British altered this gate. After being fortified it was made a double gate. Clashes took place here at then time of the Revolt of 1857.

Qudsia Bagh

This garden was built by Qudsia Begum, the wife of Emperor Muhammad Shah. Presently all that remains is a western gateway and a mosque, but at the time of its construction there was a palace, a waterfall, a summer Lodge and a flower cum fruit garden here.
