History of Lakshmi Narayan Temple

Introduction

Located on the west of Connaught Place in Delhi, Lakshmi Narayan Temple was built over a period of six years. Lakshmi Narayan Temple was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi after it was completed in 1939.

Built by B D Birla, a well known industrialist of India, Lakshmi Narayan Temple is popularly known as the Birla Temple. Lakshmi Narayan Temple is devoted to Narayana and Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth. The history of Lakshmi Narayan Temple shows that the temple has religious as well as social significance.

The temple was built at a time when the caste system in India was predominant and members of the low caste were not permitted to enter temple and other places of worship. Mahatma Gandhi inaugurated the temple as an act of defiance towards the caste system. He worked towards the upliftment of the untouchables. The temple is a symbol of Indian secularism.

The construction of Lakshmi Narayan Temple showcases Orissa style of architecture. The central hall of Lakshmi Narayan Temple, Geeta Bhavan, is embellished with beautiful carvings from Hindu mythology. The temple complex houses a separate temple dedicated to Buddha. The interior of the temple is adorned with frescos depicting scenes from his life.
