Delhi, the national capital of India, is a historically enriched with imprints of imperialism, colonialism and democracy. Historic Attractions in Delhi


  -   India Gate is a 42 meter high arch, which was designed by Edwin Luytens. It was built in 1911 as a war memorial to commemorate the death of 90,000 soldiers of the Indian Army in World War I. While the names of the martyrs are inscribed all along the arch's walls, an eternal flame was lit there in 1971.

  -   Purana Qila (Old Fort) was built by Sher Shah Suri on a hill on the banks of the river Yamuna between 1538 A.D and 1545 AD. There is a mosque with a double storied octagonal tower from where the Mughal emperor, Humayun fell and died.

  -   Jantar Mantar Observatory was built by the Rajput King of Jaipur, Sawai Jai Singh inside Connaught Place in 1724. Its purpose was to observe the movements of the stars and planets.

  -   Chandni Chowk was designed by Jahanara Begum, Shah Jahan's daughter. A commercial market, this is one of best known wholesale markets for textiles, and electronic goods in India.

  -   Safdarjang's Tomb was built in 1753-54 as the mausoleum of Safdarjang, the viceroy of the Awadh under the Mughal Emperor, Mohammed Shah. Visit the smaller pavilions in it

  -   Popular as Lal Quila, Red Fort was built by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan between 1638 and 1648. The premise contains Diwan-i-Am, Diwan-i-Khas, the Moti Masjid, the Shahi Burj and many other architectural splendors.

  -   Tughlaqabad fort was built by Ghazi Malik, founder of the Tughlaq Dynasty in 1321 at Tughlaqabad. Though it is in its ruins today, but the lofty walls, double-storied bastions, colossal towers, palaces, mosques and spacious halls speak of its majesty

  -   Jami Masjid or the Masjid-i-Jahan Numa, is the premier mosque in Old Delhi. Commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan , it was completed in 1656 AD


Modern Attractions in Delhi


  -   Parliament House is circular structure almost a kilometer in circumference, and was designed by the famed architect Edward Luytens to house the Indian Parliament.

  -   Rashtrapati Bhawan is the official residence of India's President with 340 rooms and an area of about 330 acres.

  -   Birla Mandir, built by the industrialist Raja Baldev Birla, has idols of various deities.

  -   Visit Shanti Vana where India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was cremated.

  -   Akshardham Temple will attract you with 234 pillars, 20,000 statues, a number of arches and musical fountains.

  -   Appu Ghar, this amusement park has roller coaster and other amusing features

  -   Bahá'í House of Worship is shaped like a lotus and built by the Bahá'í community.
