History of Red Fort, Delhi

Introduction

Red fort in Delhi bears an important significance in the pages of history in India. The Red fort is named so due to its red colored sand stone that had been used to build the massive citadel. The original name of the fort is Qila-e-Mualla. The fort was built during the reign of great Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. The fort was completed in the year 1648, but the construction was started nine years before in the year 1638. The fort was built when Mughal emperor Shah Jahan decided to shift his capital from Agra to Shahjahanabad (Delhi). It was built to protect the capital of Mughal Empire from foreign attacks. The Red Fort bears the history of the Mughal age, which once has seen the golden days as well as the decline of the empire. So the fort and its walls utter the story of the by gone days which makes the present base of the country.

The wonderful architecture and the construction make the fort more popular and unique. The main architects were Ustad Hamid and Ahmad. The wonderful architecture, the modern design and the symbolic importance make the fort more vital even today. The red stand stone formed in the shape of an irregular octagon with a height of 33.5 meters and perimeter of 2.41 kms. The wonderful location and the ambience make the place a different one. The Yamuna River that used to flow on the eastern part of the fort added advantage for the fort.

The fort was under the rule of the Mughal but after the first war of independence in the year 1857 the fort was fully captured and occupied by the British East India Company. During the first war of independence the fort was affected in a great amount and the remaining is still maintained by Archeological Survey of India and president of India hoists the flag on 15th August.

The famous entrance of the fort is in the western side facing Lahore and so the gate is named as Lahori Gate. The famous market area named Meena bazaar is located near Chatta Chowk. The market is the first covered market and is very much famous for the ethnic goods. Naubat or Naqqar Khanna is the near by place that is regarded as entertainment park where music is played for five times a day for the tourists.
