Aging of the face is inevitable. With the passage of
time, human skin begins to loosen on the face and on
the neck. Crow's feet appear at the corners of the eyes.
Fine forehead lines become creases and then, gradually,
deeper into folds. As the aging population grows, it
is obvious why rhytidectomy has become the third most
desired facial plastic surgical procedure. A Successful
Facelift Surgery can make you look young just
like the one you wanted.
What is a Facelift Surgery?
Face lift surgery is a surgical procedure designed
to smooth the loose skin on the facial skin, jowls,
and neck in both the men and women. A facelift technically
known as rhytidectomy can't stop the aging process.
But it can do is improving the most visible signs of
aging by removing excess fat, tightening underlying
muscles, and redraping the skin of your face and neck.
A facelift can be done alone, or in conjunction with
other procedures such as a forehead lift, eyelid surgery,
or nose reshaping.
Who goes for a facelift?
Persons with the following features go for a facelift:
1. Persons with deep lines or foldsrunning from the
corner of the nose to the corner of the mouth
2. People with loss of a well-defined jawline
3. Ones with deep wrinkles in the cheeks
4. Persons with loose skin, wrinkles, and excess fat
in the neck.
In this procedure, underlying tissues are tightened,
excess fat is removed, and the skin is gracefully re-draped
for a natural and more youthful appearance.
The surgery in detail:
The surgeon begins the incision in the area of the
temple hair, just above and in front of the ear, and
then continues around the lobe, circling the ear before
returning to the point of origin in the scalp. The skin
is raised outward before the surgeon repositions and
tightens the underlying muscle and connective tissue.
Some fat may be removed, as well as excess skin. For
men, the incision is aligned to accommodate the natural
beard lines. In all cases, the incision is placed where
it will fall in a natural crease of the skin for camouflage.
After trimming the excess skin, the surgeon closes
the incisions with fine sutures and/or metal clips,
which permit surgery without shaving hair from the incision
site. Depending on the extent of the surgery, the process
can take from two to four hours. When the procedure
is performed with a combination of mild sedatives, local
anesthesia, and a mild intravenous anesthesia, the patient
will experience little discomfort. Some surgeons prefer
to use general anesthesia for facelifts. Following the
surgery, the surgeon will apply a dressing to protect
the entire area where the incisions have been made.
Alternative treatment to a facelift:
Other treatments may be used either as alternatives,
or in combination with a facelift. Some of the options
available include those listed below.
# Resurfacing techniques
# Laser facial resurfacing
# Tissue augmentation
# Anti-wrinkle injections
# Many creams, gels and beauty treatments can
be applied
Recovering from a facelift:
Generally the pain after a facelift is mild but once
home, further painkillers may be taken if needed, as
advised by your hospital. Applying a cold compress,
such as ice or a bag of frozen peas can help to reduce
the swelling and bruising. You should not apply ice
directly to your skin as it can give you an 'ice burn'.
There are some important things to remember while
recovering from a facelift:
# keep your head elevated for a couple of days
to reduce swelling
# avoid bending or straining
# avoid saunas and massage for at least two weeks
# avoid the sun for a few weeks
# Vigorous activity should be avoided for four
or five weeks.
